Carmine Torchia per Leo Ferré – Non c’è più niente (Block Nota BN CD 040)
by Giancarlo Passarella – Muscalnews.com
The elegant records by Udine-based Nota are deluxe, and Valter Colle deserves sincere congratulations, because every release is important and exciting. Non c’è più niente is also a must-have, because it presents Léo Ferré in thirteen translated songs (some for the first time and under the supervision of Mathieu Ferrè), performed by Carmine Torchia. In addition to listening, immerse yourself in reading: in fact, the booklet contains the original lyrics, translations and contributions by Mathieu Ferré, Enrico De Angelis and Andrea Satta. To enjoy the entire project, let us be guided by the words of Léo Albert Charles Antoine Ferré (his full name), who passed away at the age of 77 in Castellina in Chianti on 14 July 1993… You are born alone, you die alone, and in between there are events, events that I hope you will choose, because most of the time, these events are imposed on you, so do everything you can to keep your events to yourself (You are born alone, you die alone, between the two, there are events, events that I hope you choose, because most of the time these events are imposed on you, so do everything you can to keep these events to yourself).. Carmine Torchia offers a sung and recited tribute, made with the heart and enveloped in a deep sense of reverence for the French artist who, at the age of 7, discovered the power of singing (and in fact, in 1925, he joined the choir of Monaco Cathedral as a soprano and discovered polyphony through the works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina): in the unmissable Non c’è più niente, you will have the opportunity to glimpse Leo Ferrè’s poetic vein and also the torment (and ecstasy) of some of his compositions. The credit obviously goes to the work done by Calabrian/Milanese Carmine Torchia, assisted by a series of high-calibre musicians. In this way, Leo Ferré’s poetry flows luxuriantly, taking on the characteristics of being unique, transgenerational and, above all, international. Through this beautiful project by the Nota label, there is a strong feeling that the French school of authors with Italian blood is still to be discovered: as was the case with Georges Brassens, this re-evaluation process must also begin for Leo Ferré…
