Description
The Holy Valley of Rieti is a unique environmental, cultural and religious area, framed by the peaks of the Apennines and enclosed by green hills. This fertile land, rich in water, also preserves the most ancient and authentic heritage of St. Francis’ experience. It was probably in the Rieti area that the Saint found the inspiration that led him to compose the extraordinary hymn of the Canticle of the Creatures. Certainly, in 1223, he had two fundamental experiences in his life and spiritual journey: the final drafting of the Rule of the Order and the invention of the first Christian nativity scene in Greccio. The book features texts by Monsignor Domenico Pompili, Ambrogio Sparagna and Raffaello Simeoni dedicated to nativity scene music and traditional musical instruments. There are also sheet music transcriptions of some songs.
Throughout Italy, the tradition of sacred folk songs performed around the nativity scene is still widespread.
It is a repertoire of great evocative intensity, formed from the spread of Franciscan lauds.
In our anthology, we have selected texts by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori and from the 18th-century tradition known as Chiarastella, in many cases through musical compositions by Ambrogio Sparagna and Mario Incudine. Among the performers are guests such as Peppe Servillo, Simone Cristicchi, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Eleonora Bordonaro, Fausto Mesolella and others.
