More than thirty years after the release of Crêuza de mä, Fabrizio de André’s Genoese dialect was translated into Neapolitan for two concerts staged in the courtyard of the Maschio Angioino on 14 and 15 September 2015. The transition from one dialect to another took place without intermediation, since the presence of dialect almost always excludes that of the mother tongue. One is born into dialect. Whether one likes it or not, one is a child of dialect. Dialect is the language of the hidden that we carry within us even when it does not come to our lips. Italian comes later, when we adapt it to our lives in order to correspond with the world. But within Italian there is always a hint, a nuance, a trace of dialect that keeps us tied to our origins and never lets us go completely. So, when Italian sounds, dialect echoes deeply. Until, at certain moments, in certain circumstances of our lives, dialect returns with force and suddenly takes us back to where we started. If Italian, therefore, is what we need to face the world, dialect allows us to return home.
